What makes Topshop so Unique?

Instyle - What makes Topshop so Unique?

Topshop Unique is without a doubt one of the hottest tickets at London fashion week. Not only does it boast attainable price points, but it determines what a nation of hipsters will be donning next season. In other words, it sets trends all of its own.

After bumping into a somewhat shy yet mesmerisingly beautiful Amber Le Bon (not just gorgeous, I hasten to add, but also sickeningly stylish, dressed in a statement red Moschino pea coat, Alexander McQueen scarf and River Island brogues) and snapping away at an array of fashionable ladies for our beloved Street Style channel, I took my place in the oh-so-exclusive standing queue and waited to be let into the show.

From here I watched Pixie Geldof, working an edgy rockabilly look in some snazzy jeepers creepers and a beanie hat, alongside the curvaceous and vivacious Daisy Lowe, who stood out in a wacky yellow print maxi-dress (if there’s one girl who can pull off this look it’s Daisy!), followed by a stream of peg-leg clad fashion editors. Finally, after the champagne and risotto feast, that we standers missed – (boo!), the lights dimmed, silence descended and the illegal warehouse rave began.

Everyone was on a natural high as the music kicked in and the models stomped out in a collection of love-worn knits, laddered jumpers and brightly coloured boots that were reminiscent of the nomadic travelling communities from the late Eighties. Sequinned jumpers, drop-crotch harem pants and futuristic statement shoulders were even more extreme than last season and brought the Eighties straight to the future, especially when worn with rainbow-braided hair and sharp-edged accessories, thrown in by stylist Katie Grand.

While I’m all up for a spot of eclectic reminiscence and a rave or two, I’m not quite sure you’ll catch me in a shell suit any time soon. But there were definitely a number of vibrant pieces to liven up any wardrobe within this collection, and I think some clever editing and sassy styling is the key to working this ‘Unique’ look.
