Polo and Roll

Instyle - Polo and Roll

The Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup is absolutely my favourite event of the year. Not because you understand I give a rats bottom about the game of polo (although of course one can be swayed by those of the riders), but it is super social, super fun and cannot be beaten for an afternoon of sipping, supping and watching, watching and watching some more. The fashion this year was also an eye opener. Reader we were in the depths of Surrey – but this did not seem to deter the ladies who were bedecked in every manner of glamorous sun frock – it was between a mini or a maxi I tell you – nothing in between. But really my eye went straight to the footwear. We’ve been yapping on about this extreme heel trend for yonks – but praise be to Gwyneth – towering, super-wedge, super-stilettos super crazy stems were in abundance. And on grass too... I can tell you, it takes a high level of skill and chuztpah. I did feel like rather the cop out in my flat gold sandals. My emerald jersey maxi was an inspired choice though because once that wind got up it was goose bump central, and there was barely enough Veuve demi-sec to revive me. An exposed leg would have resulted in quite the chill.

After Angela Hartnett had cooked me lunch I retired to one of the sweet pink Veuve branded love seats (I do recommend one for the garden). And was reclining, enjoying the fresh rarefied country air when who came and blocked the sun from my face? Well, I joke not, ‘twas the alleged rock and roller that is Johnny Borrell – complete with v neck sweater swung jauntily around his shoulders. One just has to question whether anything is sacred anymore…
