Bank Holiday Highlights

Instyle - Bank Holiday Highlights

The highlight of my bank holiday weekend was Friday's launch for Dave Egger's new book What is the What. It's a semi-fictionalised account of Valentino Achak Deng, one of the "Lost Boys" displaced by the Sudanese war, and an absolutely brilliant, heartbreaking read.

Both Dave and Valentino were at the launch, and I was more than a little awestruck – by Dave because he's one of my all-time favourite writers, and by Valentino because his story is so powerful I couldn't think of one thing to say to him that wouldn't make me seem like a shallow, fashion mag writer (ahem).

Instead, I saved making a fool of myself for later, when I asked a familiar looking woman who she was.

"I'm Helen Fielding," the Bridget Jones author replied, as I stood mortified for not recognising another one of my writing heroes. Luckily, she was more than gracious and we set about trying to spot the Anthony Gormley sculptures across the river from Penguin's amazing Thameside offices. V. good (as Bridget would say).

Other things I've learnt this weekend:
1. Johnny Borrell and Kirsten Dunst are visitors of my local pub – I saw them with my own eyes.
2. Borrell's still rocking that cowboy boot/suit trouser look.
3. It's really not hot.
